79 of 365 of What it is Like to Run a Resort

Friday, October 1, 2010.
The picture is of our dog, Senna, in the front of John's kayak. You can see our resort in the background.

I can't believe its October already. The weather sure has been fall-like though. We haven't had more than 2 days without rain and the temps have been frigid at night. Where's that "Indian Summer"?

I cleaned a cabin and then did some laundry. Cleaning the cabins has become my job and my job alone now. It is off season and there are usually days between arrivals and departures, vice versa, so I have the time to clean. So instead of calling cleaners, I do it. That's the way it goes.

Sometimes when I'm cleaning, I turn on my favorite radio station and the upbeat music helps the cleaning go faster. It usually takes me about an hour to do each cabin. I love to stand and look at the cabin when it is all clean. I stand there and look at everything and wonder where I can improve it. Its like I'm able to play house with 9 houses.

When I was a kid, I loved to cut pictures of household items out of our JC Penney catalog. Then I would put them inside a cardboard box with glue. I would attach them to the box in the appropriate place and sometimes add walls so I could glue up more things. Rug pictures would be glued to the floor, curtains to the cut out windows, etc. There never was any people in them. I just loved to decorate. Since I loved to decorate over and over, I found that cardboard boxes were the way to go. Easy and economical. Now I can play house for real. Can you believe it? I think I was preparing myself for this life.

Denny and I went grocery shopping. We dropped off her car at the shop first for an oil change. After we did that, we went to the Odonata Art Gallery. I picked up her birthday present there that I had bought a day earlier. They had to wrap it and when I picked it up, it looked beautiful. I bought her some appetizer plates. She has some very nice summer-type ones, and now she has some in her house colors that she can use when she gets sick of the summer ones. Hopefully she will like them.

Most of the day I spent with Denny watching television. We watched 2.5 movies and talked. John was outside working hard to get all the piers together and keep them from floating away. He also moved piles of wood, split wood, hauled wood and filled wood boxes. He was outside until dinner time.

I grilled out a beef tenderloin, made mom's farm broccoli, and some potatoes. It was a very nice dinner. Then we sat in the living room some more and watched television some more.

It was a good day.
