99 of 365 of What it is Like to Run a Resort

Just another picture of the rainbow that was over our lake a week ago. I can't see this enough.

I got up and got ready for the banker, who will be arriving at 9 a.m. I put on a huge pot of coffee, vacuumed the lodge and house, cleaned 3 toilets, got dressed, ate breakfast, and waited about 2 minutes before he arrived. Phew - that was a lot of work before 9 a.m.

The banker sat down with his cup of coffee and proceeded to try to get us to sign a loan that was incorrect. We had a loan agreement from him that said one thing, and then he brought another loan paper entirely. John is very savvy with this stuff and I am very glad because I don't know if I would have noticed the difference. The banker left upset and we shook our heads as we thought of this all through the day.

We have our main mortgage through John's mom. It is low, meaning we don't owe more than one 10th of our resort's value. All we wanted was a line of credit loan to get us through the off-season times when cash is low. The bank wanted us to sign for a loan for less than what was agreed upon for a line of credit. We know how much we need until the season starts again, and the bank wanted to do much less. So we sent him on his way to re-write the loan as to the initial agreement. We're not sure if he messed up or if the main offices messed up, but either way, we didn't sign anything. We have excellent credit so this shouldn't have been a problem, and we all agreed it was most likely a communication error.

John was in a mood most of the morning because of the bank's error, but the day went fine. He resigned himself to the fact that he would have to go over the banker's head and contact the main offices. You do what you have to do.

I went into town to return the movies and got two more. I also dropped off a large bag of donations to the resale shop and, of course, bought a few more clothes items. I saw a friend outside the store and we talked for awhile. She is the health inspector and I reminded her that we will be gone for the winter. She will pencil us in in early December sometime. Hopefully we will be here. We plan on being in Door County a lot this year. We'll have to find a date that works for all of us.

I went to the grocery store for a couple of items I need to bake with. Usually I see someone there I know but not today. I went to the library last and talked with Renie a little before I left. I feel like going to the library is my duty. Its the main way of keeping up with what is going on in town, which is fun.

After I got home and watched one of the movies, of which I fast-forwarded about a half hour's worth, John and I started working. I went downstairs and put in a load of laundry then went to the cabins to strip dirty laundry. Aspen and Spruce needed to be stripped and bags of fresh laundry made up. As soon as I had the dirty laundry out, I started making a fresh bag. That's when I realized I was out of tall kitchen garbage bags. So I took a bag and went to the closed down cabins. I took out the left over garbage bags, toilet paper and paper towel. Then I grabbed some of the dirty laundry out of them too. Someone would think I looked like Santa with the huge bag on my back as I walked to the basement.

Several trips to the cabins later, there was a fresh laundry bag in Aspen, half of Balsam was stripped and I had more paper supplies in the basement. We would be set until the end of the year, I think, for toilet paper, paper towel and sheets. I might have to get more trash bags though and I was just at the store two days in a row.

John tried to get the pier out that is in our lagoon. The pier on the left of the lagoon had been under water part of the summer because of all the rain we received. So the bolts were very difficult to move and John had a hard time. Finally he got the bolts loosened and then after wrenching on the pole for awhile, he got an idea. He hooked up the boat to the pier next door to the one that was giving him trouble. He tied up the boat and turned on the motor. He aimed the motor at the adjoining pier and moved a lot of the sand away from the pole. Within a minute or two later he was able to remove the pole with ease. There is so much muck in that lagoon that it had acted like quick sand to the poles of the pier. When John stirred up the muck a little, concentrating in the small area of the pier's pole, he was able to loosen the pole. So finally he was able to take out the poles at the end of the pier so the entire pier can be pulled out.

We have pictures of this lagoon from the 1950's when it was a lot larger than it is now. There were less shrubs, trees, etc. around it, and the piers were a lot longer. Through time the shrubs have grown into it and muck has piled up because of the leaves, current and more. We don't know what to do about it. Probably we'll just put off asking the DNR about what we can do for another year.

I sewed on a Christmas present for awhile while I did several loads of laundry. Sometimes the washer gets off kilter and I have to rearrange the laundry and try it again. For years the washer sat on cinder block and when the washer would get off kilter and vibrate, it would move itself off of one of the blocks. That was very difficult to get right again. Finally I put a large piece of plywood under the washer on top of the cinder blocks. Now if it vibrates, which it does often, it won't fall off a brick on a corner at least. Sometimes the easiest fix is too obvious I guess.

I did some yard work. The dahlias were pulled out and put into a bag for our basement. Then John and I went inside for dinner. I had thought it was only 5 p.m. because my watch was wrong. It was after 7:30 so dinner was really late. So we just made a frozen pizza jazzed up with onions and green peppers. We each had a glass of wine and then watched the other movie. John was asleep before the half way point but he didn't miss anything. It was a good day.
