83 of 365 of What it is Like to Run a Resort

Tuesday, October 5, 2010.
Today the sun was shining brightly and I was glad. I needed it to dry out all the leaves I had to rake.

As you can see from the picture, I did a lot of raking. This picture is of the front yard only. I still have to rake around at least half of our cabins and our lakeside lawn. You can see our golden retriever, Senna, in the background supervising my work.

I noticed that the tomatoes that I got from my mom's farm were getting too ripe so I made tomato soup. John wanted me to add some Nueske's bacon in too so I fried some bacon, onion, swiss chard and green peppers first. Then I put all the tomatoes in a osterizer and made them into liquid. Then they simmered for over an hour. After that I added some cream cheese, milk and a little water with bouilion in too. It tasted wonderful and I will have that for lunch again today. So I had soup and a piece of toast for lunch.

We are invited to a cabin where 4 customers are making us dinner tonight. I can't wait. They are wonderful cooks.

After I was done raking, I helped John with a plumbing project up at the Balsam cabin. He needed me to go into the bathroom and flush/plunge the toilet as I ran water in the tub and plunged that too. He was still having problems with the drain. He took the cover off the septic and watched to see if the water was flowing out like it should. It wasn't. So he then took some plumbing apart under the cabin and tried to find the plug there.

I went into the Spruce cabin and cleaned the kitchen and made the beds. I was going to finish it, but we got a visitor. The president of the Mercer Chamber of Commerce came over to ask if they could hold their board meeting at our resort in November. We had planned on going to Seattle the first week of November, but now might reschedule to the second week. He talked for awhile and then asked if maybe John might be interested in being on their advertising committee. I said I would ask him.

I went back to the Spruce cabin and cleaned until after 5 p.m. Then as I was just about to tell John what time it was, and that he had to get ready for dinner, he drove the ATV by me. He was dragging some cut branches down to the campfire. I told him what time it was and he and I went in to get ready for dinner.

He told me that some other customers had come up to the cabin he was working on to see the view from the back of Balsam. The tamarack trees are changing color and are quite a sight to see. He said that he talked with the couple for 2 hours. And here I thought he had been working.

We had a wonderful dinner with Bob/Lynn, and Rick/Maggie in the Alder cabin. They cooked a fabulous spaghetti dinner with salad and garlic bread and then dessert. The dessert was brownies with caramel and pecans on top. Then they put ice cream on top too. My sweet tooth was satisfied to say the least.

We got back to the lodge around 9:00 p.m. and then watched a little television before bed. It was a good day.
