The picture is of Hemlock's quilts hanging on the line. It is time to close down the cabins and launder everything that isn't nailed down. John thought the quilts looked so nice hanging on the line that he took the picture. They are pretty.
John continues to work hard on getting all the cabins shut down for the winter. Birch is all finished and tomorrow he will be doing Hemlock and possibly Cedar. He takes the ATV and trailer up to the cabin with a lot of tools and an air compressor. He works constantly all afternoon or until dark. He pulls apart the pipes, blows out water with the air compressor and puts in RV anti-freeze where he can to keep any residual water from cracking the pipes when it gets cold. Up here the temperature can get as low as 40 below zero in the dead of winter. We have to prepare.
Two groups of our customers left today. They left us a lot of food and cookies, etc. We love that. John and I had some home made biscuits with a sausage gravy. That was yummy. They also left us some Zingers. They are like Twinkies but with a raspberry color and coconut on top.
Two of our fishermen customers went out fishing most of the day and one of them had a musky come right up to the boat but he lost it. They said it was huge. They also saw an otter on the river.
John transported a customer up to Shay Dam and put him in there with a kayak/paddle. Lloyd, the customer, paddled back to the resort.
I went into town to mail some packages to friends and customers. This is the time of the year when I can finally get to all the thank-yous. Earlier in the year a customer gave us a bunch of salmon from Oregon, where he is from. He actually brought it here on the airplane in dry ice in his suitcase. Gosh, that was very generous. I sent them some cranberries and cranberry stuff. Also a good friend of ours sent us a lap top that his company didn't need any more. We could never send enough stuff to say thank you for that, but I sent a bunch of cranberry stuff to try to show our gratitude at least.
When I got back from town, the Mercer Rentals truck was pulling in to pick up our pontoon. They service it for us, put it in the water in the spring and take it out in the fall. Then they store it for us. The pontoon is used extensively throughout the year by our customers who have disabilities. The pontoon was donated by someone from town many years ago to our non-profit organization - Pine Forest Ventures. Our non-profit is for sports and recreation for people with disabilities. Mercer Rentals has been doing all the maintenance and storage for our pontoon for years also as a donation to our non-profit and to help people with disabilities. In return we also send everyone we can to their business.
I will take the car there to Mercer Rentals tomorrow for an oil change and to check the rear wheels. On the way to dinner tonight with Bob and Lynn I heard a strange noise coming from the tire where I was sitting by. Hopefully it is nothing major. Also when I went to the Cranberry Marshes with my mother-in-law and daughter the battery sounded almost dead and the car almost didn't start. So I had left it running between stops. They will check that too.
When they came to pick up the pontoon, we emptied out all our life jackets, paddles, seat cushions and chairs. Since the pontoon didn't start, John paddled it over to the boat landing. Our customer, Jeff, thought he looked like Huck Finn. I thought that was pretty funny. When we were putting the pontoon on the trailer, Lloyd came paddling up to the resort. This was his first time in a kayak and he loved it so much he is thinking of getting one.
We went out for dinner with Bob and Lynn who stay in our Alder cabin for a month every fall. Bob and I were celebrating our birthdays. I game him some all natural remedies that come in a tin that I bought at a store. They weren't cheap but he needs them. He is always in pain from something. They got me a hand-painted bottle of Merlot straight from Italy. I will definitely love that.
We went for dinner to the Bell Chalet in Ironwood. For some reason the food wasn't as good as it usually is. My dish was supposed to come with broccoli and I could only find small specs of it. John's dish was a bunch of meat in a red sauce but no noodles. So I gave him some of mine. We were both a little disappointed. This is the first time we were ever not happy with our meals there.
When we got home, our customers/fishermen were joking with us how they had the resort all to themselves so they did security patrols. That was funny.
It was a good day.
