82 of 365 of What it is Like to Run a Resort

Monday, October 3, 2010.

The picture is of my mom's 3 new kittens. I just love to look at this picture. It makes me smile.

My mother-in-law, Denny, left pretty early in the day. She had a lot of errands to run before she got home. She had a 5 hour drive ahead of her the way it was so she headed out by 9:30 a.m. Her shepherd didn't want to go at first but after calling him, he jumped into her car and off they went.

I went onto Facebook and found out that the customer who was staying in our Alder cabin was on-line. I asked her via live-chat if she wanted me to come up and clean her bathroom, give her new sheets, etc. She had been here for 2 weeks and was planning on staying another two. She agreed if I would wait for about an hour.

I got all the cleaning supplies ready and headed to the Aspen cabin. I thought that it would take me about an hour to clean and then I would head up to Alder. After a few telephone calls about openings and me getting side tracked by my sewing room, I noticed that 2 hours had passed.

So I took the clean laundry up to the Alder cabin and started cleaning while I visited with them. I felt a little awkward cleaning while people were in the cabin because that never happens. Usually I am cleaning all by myself with the radio on. This time I was cleaning while I carried on a conversation. I didn't mind at all, in fact, it was a nice way to finish the cabin. It took about an hour with visiting and cleaning and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope they didn't mind.

After that I went back to the Aspen cabin and finished that one. Initially when I had walked into the cabin I noticed that there must have been a perfume explosion. It really reeked of strong perfume. So I had opened all the windows and doors. It was a good thing that the day was mild. After I got back from the Alder cabin, I noticed a strong cigarette smell instead of the perfume. So then I knew why there was so much perfume, which had by then worn off a little. They were trying to cover up the smell of cigarettes. After a few hours of keeping the cabin open and all the cleaning I did, the cabin smelled almost back to normal.

I use a bleach solution to wash down every surface in the kitchen. The cleaning solution I used in the bathroom also smells good and clean like bleach. The furniture polish smells like orange and the window cleaner smells clean too. I have a potpourri bag in the vacuum next to the bag, so when I vacuum, the smell of the potpourri also gets into the air. Needless to say the cabin was much better by the time I was finished.

We don't have a non-smoking policy in all of our cabins, just our new one - Ironwood. For the most part people are very considerate and smoke out on the screen porches. I put all the ash trays out on the porches too to stress that that's where they should smoke. But some people just don't care because they are so addicted to cigarettes that they have to have one in their hand at all times. I feel bad for them but if they would just be more careful, we wouldn't care as much. Like if they blew the smoke out an open window, put the butts in something safe before they threw them out, if they didn't throw their butts on the ground, if they didn't burn the furniture or bathroom sink, that would be great. But we have had some instances where people have not done the above.

One time I cleaned a cabin and didn't notice something until spring cleaning. It was during the winter months. There was an arm protector on each side of a sofa's arm, made out of fabric, and covering each end of the arm. During spring cleaning I took these off to wash them. (If I notice they are dirty, I wash them earlier then too.) When I took them off, there was a huge burn hole in one of the arms. The arm protector had been clipped around the burn area so no burnt fabric was showing. Then they switched the arm protectors so I wouldn't notice the huge hole. The hole was at least a half inch in diameter and very deep. So there went the quality of one of our sofas. Did they tell us and be honest about it? NO because they were afraid that we would charge them something. To be honest myself, I probably would have charged them $40, which is the price of a good used sofa at the one, favorite sale I go to almost every year. But the people were afraid and became dishonest. I am still bothered by this as you can tell.

Anyway back to my day. I then took all the cleaning supplies into the Spruce cabin and dropped them off for tomorrow. I went into the Hemlock cabin and took out some of the laundry. The cabin will be closed up soon for the winter and I need to get all the laundry out. I will just pick up laundry when I am going to do a load of it. The pile of laundry in the basement can be huge and John has a difficult enough time walking around the basement as it is. I don't want him to fall because of laundry piles. He falls enough as it is.

He took in a pier today. It was under water and even though the water was receding a little, it was time to take out some piers anyway. He then went up to the Balsam cabin where there is a plumbing problem with the tub and toilet not draining properly. It turns out that someone took a bunch of long, dark hair out of a hairbrush and flushed it down the toilet. It clogged the drain which caused other common items to not go down properly. So he had to use a "snake" device to clear out the drain. He was up there for quite awhile trying to get it to flow smoothly by flushing water, plunging, putting chemicals, plunging, etc. He thinks he finally got it.

Later in the day I sewed some more. It is getting to that time of the year when I have more time to quilt, etc. I finished a project that I had started at our quilt retreat - a Halloween applique. I think it looks good and it was fun.

It was a good day.
