88 of 365 of What it is Like to Run a Resort

Sunday, October 10, 2010.

Our friends, Brad & Sandra are leaving today but our friend, Don will stay for another day or two.

Brad took his two springer spaniels down to the water. The little one, Waters is his name, had never swam before. The picture is of his first attempt at retrieving the decoy and swimming. Waters is a funny name for a dog that never swam, but who am I to judge?

This morning started out by being hectic. We thought that 3 cabins would be arriving at 9 a.m. So since the Maple cabin's customers had left early, I started on that one first at about 8 a.m. I cleaned almost the entire cabin when John arrived to tell me the customers had called. They didn't need this cabin. Aaaarrrrgggg!

We ended up putting our caretaker in that cabin until January when he will move into our house. Then we will be going to Door County for the winter. So I guess I had to clean that cabin anyway.

The Aspen cabin was very clean so John volunteered to clean that one. I stripped Cedar, dropped off the cleaning supplies at Spruce, got the new laundry ready for Cedar and took a shower. John finished Aspen fairly quickly and our caretaker cleaned Spruce. I checked it later and he did a great job. I didn't have to fix or clean anything.

After my shower I started on the food for the Packer game. I made chicken enchiladas with a lot of side dishes. Our guests would have that for lunch and if anyone else happened to stop by, they could help themselves too. I always make too much.

We all watched the Packer game in the lodge. Quoting a friend of mine, "Those Morons!" They lost, of course, and they played so badly they didn't deserve to win. When the team you were rooting for loses, that makes a bummer party.

The customers who we were expecting at 9 a.m. finally arrived at 2 p.m. They are a bunch of fishermen and they had decided to stop in Tomahawk, Minocqua and Mercer to watch the Packer game on their way up. I guess I can't blame them.

I invited our neighbor, Harry, to watch the game with us. He is 80 years old and lives alone. He talked about his old stories all through the game's commercials. When he thought someone was a little more interested than the rest of us, he would move his chair or walk over to that person and talk all the way through the game to them. They thought of some excuse to move and then he would go back to his seat. We've heard his stories about a hundred times but we know he appreciates getting out sometimes and seeing new people so we invite him.

After the party I went for a walk in the beautiful woods with the two dogs. Buddy limped along and Senna ran around and enjoyed the walk too. It felt good to get out because the weather was beautiful.

When I got back, I had to vacuum the lodge and house. The little springers left white fur everywhere. Our dogs shed a little too, but at one point we had 5 dogs in our house today. Our neighbor's dog, Zeke, was here again. He has to come about 2 miles or so through the woods just to get here. He loves it at the resort where there's other dogs, people and usually someone to pet him. We caught Zeke trying to dig a hole under the Cedar cabin though and that is not good. He's a monster some times. That Zeke led 2 dogs to their deaths in the last 10 years. Its a long story but we can't believe the old dog still comes all this way so often. I called his owner and they sent someone to get him about 3 hours later.

Our friends left so we said goodbye to them and thanked them for coming and for my birthday present. It was fun to have them here.

I made leftovers for dinner around 7 p.m. as we watched a Discovery Channel special about the Lost Crystal Caves. The show was quite amazing.

John kept flipping to the football game during the commercials and he stayed up pretty late watching the 49'rs.

It was a good day.
