First things first, I had to turn on the Ironwood cabin for our customers who would be arriving around noon. In preparation for this I fed the dogs so that I could get Buddy to walk a little with me to the cabin.
Buddy eventually met me at the cabin but by that time I had turned on the refrigerator with the newly filled ice tray, gone to the basement and turned on the hot water, checked the cabin for anything that was wrong and turned up the heat. The cabin still has that new smell when I walk in, which is nice. Hopefully it won't smell bad when all the fishermen leave.
I walked Buddy back to the resort. I remembered that the fishermen would need the boats today so I then proceeded to bail out the water and leaves. It had been snowing a little while earlier, so the prospect of sticking my hands in the ice cold water did not thrill me. I sat in the back of the boat and grabbed the sponge that was in the bail bucket that is always there. I proceeded to soak up the little rain water that was in the boat. Each boat bottom is different. This one has metal ridges going across the bottom. Each ridge holds water. So I put the sponge in and emptied the frigid water by squeezing out the sponge over the side of the boat. Finally I was finished. I put my hands under my arms for a few minutes to warm them up. Then I proceeded to the next boat. By the time I was finished with that one, my hands were beet red, but it had to be done. Just a thought, if you ever have to put your hands repeatedly into cold water, don't touch cold metal. I rested my hand on the cold side of the boat and it was so cold that I felt like my hand was burning. I'm a wimp I guess.
The customers arrived a couple of hours later so I was glad to have the boats finished for them. I wouldn't have wanted to do that last minute.
Then I threw in some laundry, cleaned up the kitchen a little and then went into town. I was out of caffeine and I needed more. I stopped at the grocery store, got some donuts for the lady at the Chamber of Commerce, dropped off the donuts and check there for our fee, and then went to the library. I got a couple videos at the library to watch today because I didn't really have to do anything for once, which I totally intended to do - nothing. It was a day without having to clean a cabin. There will be more of these as the winter season approaches.
I got home to two very enthusiastic dogs. They thought I was never coming back because they were unbelievably excited to see me. Then our caretaker and his friend, Jay, who I went to high school with, greeted me. They had just put up our storm windows on the upper story of our lodge. Extension ladders were used, I'm sure, and it wasn't easy. They washed the inside of the windows but not the outside, which is fine. I didn't care. I was so glad to have them up because then there wouldn't be the constant condensation on the inside running down onto the wood sill and walls, etc. Finally we have those windows up.
I made lunch and then watched a movie. John came home during the last part so I put it on pause and helped him unload the car. We talked for awhile and then I watched the rest.
Just before 5 p.m. I decided to put our storm windows up on the rest of the lodge. I took the screens off and put them downstairs and each trip back up, I would carry a storm window, which had been stored in the basement. I cleaned both sides of the storm windows with glass cleaner, and then swept the sills off before I put them on. We are now set for winter.
That doesn't mean I don't still have yard work to do, but our house will be more efficient now with the heat, etc.
I took down all the newer screens off our interior windows and that's when I saw it. There was a huge spider between the kitchen window screen and glass. I slowly took off the screen and tried to kill it, but it was the fastest spider I have ever seen. John and I have tried numerous times to kill it to no avail. It runs into a crack in the wall and window trim and is safe. Some day it will get weak from lack of food and then I hope to have the upper hand. But for now I feel creepy every time I have to be by the sink.
John went down to the boats to bail the last one out, which the fishermen will need tomorrow. He came in a little while later while I was sewing in the basement to tell me he needed my help. The water has receded so far that the boat is now hung up on the shore by the motor. After we got ropes, gloves and waders, we went outside. It was starting to get dark so I hoped we would be able to finish this soon. I hooked a rope in the back of the boat's handle and John got into the water in his waders. He lifted while I pulled up on the rope from the pier. Heave, ho, heave, ho and finally the motor came out of the muck and dirt. Thankfully the propeller was still attached.
John then put the boat onto the other side of the pier where there was deeper water. He finished cleaning it out and came inside. We were done for the night.
I sewed awhile more on the Christmas present for a friend while laundry went around and around in the appliances. I did 4 loads of laundry today and so I had two loads of my personal clothes to put away. I took them upstairs and started to, gulp, put away my summer clothes and take out my winter ones.
I had two piles of clothes on my bed. The largest was the pile of summer clothes I took out of my closet. The smaller one was winter clothes I took out of a Rubbermaid bin. I then made a pile of things to take to the resale shop. I figure if I haven't worn something in 2 years, that I don't need it. I have quite a pile to take into town.
John was relaxing on the sofa watching sports and soon I could hear him snoring. He was out pretty late in Milwaukee the night before at a "roast" for a long-time friend. This friend has been a quadriplegic for over 30 years. He has made quite an impact on the Americans with Disabilities Act in the Milwaukee area over the years and is very well respected. He got his injury in high school when he was a wrestler. So John was up pretty late at his friend's roast and then drove home today. He is very tired.
I now have all my summer clothes in a Rubbermaid container which is covered with a summer wrap and made to look like a side table by my bed. I think it is fine there and I can use it as a side table because of the cover being flat.
We received a call from our bank earlier in the day saying that the manager wanted to meet with us tomorrow. We have had paperwork into the bank for refinancing for months and they keep apologizing for the delay. He said they finally have it finished and wants to meet with us at 9 a.m. to have us sign it. We are happy to finally have this finished, that's for sure. So tomorrow we will have to get up early to prepare but that is fine - we're not sleep deprived. It was a good day.
